Define Normal : late diagnosis of neurodiversity

At 48 I started seeing a whole lot of social media that I resonated with.

Tiktok, Instagram, even a comedy show had my brain pinging.

I sat with it for a few months, talked to a few people and tried to make a decision about why I may want a diagnosis. Would it make a difference to my life? Would an official diagnosis help to improve my quality of life?

This is what I decided:

  1. Having a framework helps me to better understand myself, both going forward and also areas in which I have struggled previously.

  2. Appropriate treatment may improve my health. Reducing stress, anxiety and depression can only benefit my physical and mental health.

  3. Having an official diagnosis may help with access to funding and services (I am in Australia).

  4. Understanding myself will help me to adapt processes etc within my home and my small business.

  5. Being aware of this has helped me to be able to identify where I need help, and actually ask for it /do things to get the help I needed.

Would I recommend getting a diagnosis if you feel that you fit the criteria?

Yes, and no.
